Routine…you’ve heard it all before. To start a healthy lifestyle, you must develop a healthy exercise and food routine. I believe that when people think of ‘healthy lifestyle routine’, it sounds long, uncomfortable and a lot of effort. I mean, routine translates to “A sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program” and that appears daunting. But let’s accept that for a second- fine, it’s a bit daunting and it feels like so much change and hard work to completely change your lifestyle- so “I’ll start Monday”. If, for a moment, we go along with the notion that routine is a daunting process, we will try to avoid it. Fine. Let’s avoid it. But if we don’t develop a routine, how are we going to get a healthy lifestyle? Here’s an answer start NOW and start SMALL. Make a goal now, be it small and achieve it. Then set yourself another goal. Achieve that too. How many goals have you achieved? The more you meet, the more you will set for yourself and so, we slowly build a mumbled healthy lifestyle which, refined, will eventually become a routine.
Best place to start giving yourself goals: RESEARCH- proper research- the ab twister on the good morning show WILL NOT GIVE YOU abs! the ab twister is an abdominal machine which, if done properly, will increase the size of your abdominal muscles. But guess what? If you have flab around them, you won’t be able to see your 6pack. Why do you think they give you a ‘free gift’ that includes a meal plan book? Because losing fat is a simple combination of cardio, resistance training( weights or the ab twister in this case) and most importantly nutrition.
This is just a simple example of companies trying to sell you a product and nothing more. DO YOUR RESEARCH and break the myths. A while back I wrote an article covering the Myths of Fitness, aiming to bust the myths we are surrounded by on a daily
basis so this can be part of your research.
Next, start with your next meal- after your research, find or make a meal plan which you know the nutritional value to. This way, you can start thinking about food as a
nutritional necessity. I am not saying food should be bland to be healthy, not at all. For me, spices and herbs are imperative. Luckily, cinnamon and chilli boost a faster metabolism so even more reason to include them in your foods.
The most important thing for any routine, in my opinion, is mental positivity and never losing sight of your goal and why you are doing this. If you are unhappy now, you should know that is not normal-you don’t have to accept you will be unhappy forever. Similarly, you are tired physically and mentally- developing a routine of exercise every day will show you, you don’t have to accept that you are tired on a regular basis. Besides, wouldn’t you want to know what its like to feel energized at 330pm or in the morning before work?
My philosophy, although simple, is HEALTH BEFORE BEAUTY. For me, the need to be healthy and enjoy life is more important than any waist measurement. So what makes you healthy and happy?
A solid step forward with a strong drive will result in a successful routine. The key is to start now and start strong.
What will be your starting point?
All the best,
